“Universal Soldier: The Return” – This stylish but empty sequel pits former Universal Soldier Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) against the latest crop of power-hungry computerized soldiers, including Michael Jai White and wrestler Bill Goldberg. The film is short on thematic and emotional resonance due to weak acting and a simple-yet-confusing storyline. Among the bright spots are the atmospheric Unisol facility and the fight scene between Van Damme and White. The man vs. technology theme has been done much better in the “Terminator” films, “Soldier” and the original “Universal Soldier.” C+
