‘The Mummy’ (1999) review

“The Mummy” – Writer-director Stephen Sommers blends light humor with serious drama in Universal’s bid to start a new “Mummy” franchise. Brendan Fraser leads one of two teams in search of treasure, but Imhotep is unwittingly revived. The special effects and fight scenes have energy and style. John Hannah and Kevin J. O’Connor provide a nice dose of comic relief, while the tragic villain is powerfully played by Arnold Vosloo. It’s rather convenient that the Mummy’s curse gives him so much power, but at least the story is easy to follow. B+
