“Pieces of April” – This indie charmer has two main plotlines. Well-intentioned bad cook April (Katie Holmes) fumbles her way through preparation of a Thanksgiving meal in her ratty apartment. Meanwhile, April’s family, including her bitter, cancer-ridden mom (Patricia Clarkson) travels to visit her. The film ultimately serves up the true spirit of the holiday while avoiding Hollywood schmaltz.
