Surprisingly funny ‘Girls Trip’ is the female answer to ‘The Hangover’ (Movie review)

So I got “Girls Trip” (2017) because my wife and a friend were dying to see it. They watched it by themselves before I did and told me that it was terrible: “It wasn’t funny, it was just dumb jokes.” I had no intention to ever watch it, but I found myself curious one night when I was looking for a movie I wouldn’t mind turning off if the kid started to cry. So I turned it on, and ya know, it isn’t bad!

I would describe the movie as a female “Hangover.” It’s also much like “Bridesmaids,” just not as polished.

“Girls Trip” revolves around four old friends who get together for a trip to New Orleans. The typical characters are present (broke girl, famous girl living fake life, funny girl, and girl scared to go outside her bubble), but they are well acted. In the movie’s two-hour span, we grow quite fond of the characters and enjoy the ride.

The movie has the female version of dick jokes, which normally would turn me off, but for some odd reason I found myself laughing out loud at all of them. At one point, one of the girls is literally peeing on a crowd of people … yet it’s funny.

I’m not sure who I’d recommend this movie to, or why, but I don’t regret watching it. So give it a shot if it’s on the movie channels or Netflix someday. But make sure it’s not edited, and don’t expect too much.
