‘American Made’ compares favorably with ‘Narcos’ as an old-school drug-trade thriller (Movie review)

Something about the ’80’s/’90s Mexican and Colombian drug scene really appeals to me, so I was excited for “American Made” (2017). Then after watching the excellent Netflix series “Narcos,” I kind of expected to be disappointed by “American Made,” but I actually enjoyed it!

It’s loosely based on the true story of a guy who is hired to work for the CIA, but begins working for the drug cartels at the same time. Obviously he gets in the middle of the War on Drugs between the USA and the cartels and tries to balance staying alive and not going to jail. The suspense and action of his growing “business” and watching him struggle to keep it under control kept me interested, and the true events that shape the story make it better.

I can’t say much more without getting into the plot, which I try not to do, so I’ll just leave my recommendation. If you enjoy the ’80s/’90s drug trade era as I do, and don’t want to read subtitles, this one is for you.
